Orcs v Night Crawlers

This is a 2,000 point game of Kings of War, 3rd edition.

Richard's Night Crawler army are figures from the Dream Blade board game, repainted and based.
The 3 units of monstrous sized infantry are Butchers, the 2 units of smaller infantry are Dopplegangers.

My army today consists of 2 hordes of Axe each with a magic item, one horde of Long Axe, one Regiment of MoreAxe a regiment of Gore Riders and a regiment of Trolls .The characters are a Krudger, Flagger, God Speaker and Troll Bruiser.

After advancing the Gore Riders they are charged by two units on turn one and are almost destroyed. The morale test makes them waver in their next turn so they get charged again and are destroyed.

The Nightcralwers make the first charge and inflict a lot of damage. When the Orcs charge back they destroy one unit of Doppelgangers.

Doppelgangers use the attack stats of the unit they are fighting, the Orc Horde has a lot of attacks and Crushing Strength (1) so they do a lot of damage.

One of the Orc hordes is destroyed, the MoreAxe charge in next and are flanked in the following turn.

The longAxe Horde are unable to protect their flanks but the Flying monster go's for the Orc Flagger instead. The horde are charged by three units but take little damage. When they charge in their following turn the Orcs destroy the unit in the centre.

In Kings of War only the charging unit attacks, if the enemy is not destroyed they back of an inch and they enemy will charge in the following turn. Unless they suffer a Wavering result on the morale test in which case they can't charge.

My remaining Orc units are destroyed with only the Trolls making a last charge. My surviving characters, the Orc Krudger (general) and the Troll Bruiser both charge enemy characters for some single combat.

At the end of the game only the Trolls and 2 characters survive.

Sunday All-Dayer

Had an all day session, today, with a good mix of games. We played a couple of games of Congo, playing the Last Queen of Aksoum scenario with African Kingdoms attacking White Men, and then the same scenario with White Men attacking Jungle Tribes.

Here's a game of Bolt Action Doctor Who with UNIT versus a Sontaran invasion force.

Here's an excellent scratchbuilt Sontaran scout ship, made from a polystyrene sphere and a net.

Hordes of the Things with Hyborian barbarians against elves.

This is a Team Yankee game played in 5mm.

Alien Squad leader. The Human Imperials got eaten by the Hive Mind.

Here's a game of Kings of War, Undead against Wood Elves.

And this is Project Z.

More Kings of War: Orcs v Dwarves

Last week I played Alex and his Dwarves in a 2,000 point pitched battle, at the club bristolwargaming.co.uk

I took 4 hordes of axe (yes I'm going to spell it the British way), 2 troops of Skulks (bows), a regiment of Gore Riders and a horde of Trolls. My heroes were a Crudger on Winged Slasher, a Flagger and a God Speaker. Most of my models are from the 80's and have fought under various editions of Warhammer in the past.
Facing me on my left were Rangers, Shield Breakers and Ironclad, in the centre a horde of Ironclad, a regiment of Ironguard, and a regiment of Bezerkers. On my right 2 organ guns and some Ironwatch (crossbows). There were 5 characters including a Warsmith who boosted the artillery.
I chose to go second, meaning Alex would have to shoot while I was further away. I made a general advance but kept the magic item, giving one Axe the Pathfinder ability, unrevealed since they couldn't clear the wood in one turn anyway. Throughout the game I was taking heavy missile casualties.
On my left my Gore Riders soaked up a lot of missile hits from the Rangers who were shooting and falling back, but I eventually charged them and almost destroyed them, but.were themselves then charged in the flank and front and destroyed. My Orcs burst through the woods and wheeled onto the hill. The Ironclads moved out of their charge arc but I got them with my Trolls and wiped them out.

In the centre the Bezerkers charged another horde and bounced off, my horde then charged them and destroyed them. The Bezerker Lord alongside them spent the rest of the game charging one unit after another in the flank and rear and survived the game.
On my right a horde the Dwarf artillery and Ironwatch destroyed one horde and then poured fire into two more. My Skulks moved up and shot an organ gun to death.

Later, after a few turns of battling 2 units, I destroyed the Iron Guard, casting Bane Chant to boost my Orcs. I then got front and flank charges on the Dwarf horde and destroyed it. But both my units were finished off by missile fire leaving an empty space in the middle of the field. I pulled my 2 characters out of range for the final turn.

Back on the left my Krudger broke cover and finished of the Rangers, my Axe destroyed the remaining unit. In the last turn they each charged a Dwarf character, with both surviving by about one hit.

We rolled for an extra turn and the game ended with an Orc victory, having more points left on the table. My fourth game of KoW and my first victory, fun as always.

Kings of War: Goblins v Dwarves

On Sunday I played a 1500 point game of Kings of War with Richard at our club in Bristol, bristolwargaming.co.uk

I took Goblins, I’ve never fielded an all goblin army before.  I took a legion of Sharp Sticks, a legion of Rabble, a horde Spitters (archers), a horde of trolls, a regiment each of Chariots and Fleabag Riders, plus 2 Big Rock Throwers. That’s 150 infantry by the way. For heroes I had a King, a Flaggit, a Wiz and a Troll Bruiser (a great figure from Foundry I bought on a bring and buy).

Richard’s army had 4 regiments of Iron Guard, a horde of Iron Watch, 2 Organ Guns, and 2 Kings. Some magic items made the two units on my left especially formidable.

Deciding I was going to lose a protracted exchange of missiles I advanced. My cavalry were stopped by missile fire as they crested the hill, wavering for a turn. Not wanting to wait the Chariots pressed on and were wiped out by crossbows and organ guns.

I advanced on my left, sending in the trolls and cavalry. The cavalry were defeated and the trolls fought for several turns. My Troll hero took on the dwarves who had just defeated the cavalry and destroyed them and then the trolls destroyed their opponents.

Meanwhile the Dwarf King on that side took out my standard bearer in single combat before charging a horde of 40 archers.

The trolls turned to face the dwarf Rangers but the Horde was destroyed by missile fire before they could charge, the Bruiser charged into the side and routed the dwarves, clearing the whole left side of the field except for one hero.

Several times I had the dilemma of accepting a morale result of wavering or use and Inspiring character to re-roll, where a worse result could result in a rout. In each case I went with the re-roll, since if the unit stood there for the next turn and took another round of fire it would be destroyed without achieving anything anyway, twice it worked and I was able to move forward. The last time, when my Troll Bruiser was sent wobbly by the Organs Guns, now facing off against him, I got a worse roll and he was gone.

After some missile casualties, my rabble legion on the right came into contact with 2 units of dwarves. After breaking the rabble the dwarves then charged the spearmen in the flank. With missile hits on them already they both took huge amounts of damage, but both survived a turn longer than I expected. Those huge units can take some punishment.

After hitting nothing for the entire game my Rock Throwers both hit a unit of dwarves doing so much damage they might easily have broken if I’d rolled better against their morale. At this point with my army reduced to some archers, stone throwers and characters we called it as a dwarf victory as they still had solid fighting units left.

There was a point where I thought the goblins might win, but that faded when the trolls went, and the loss of the big legions completed it. A fun game.
